The Trieste Contemporanea Committee announces the eleventh edition of the International Design Contest Trieste Contemporanea with the aim of showcasing the most original design offerings from the countries of Central Eastern Europe.

 

The initiative is under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Central European Initiative (CEI). It avails itself of the collaboration of the Museum of Architecture and Design–Ljubljana (BIO 50, 24th Biennial of Design), the Institute for Contemporary Art–Zagreb and the Civico Museo di Storia Naturale–Trieste.

art. 1 - THEME OF THE 2014 COMPETITION

Contestants are to choose a subject (a physical or intangible cultural asset) which is an original and distinctive feature (whether a well-proven or potential value) of a place in one of the countries within the purview of the competition, with the aim of highlighting its cultural and touristic value.

CONTESTANTS SHOULD PRODUCE A KIT CONSISTING OF AN ORIGINAL ITEM OF CONTEMPORARY DESIGN, TAKING THE FORM OF A SOUVENIR AND TO BE CONCEIVED FOR SMALL-SCALE AND LOW COST PRODUCTION, AND AN ACCOMPANYING INFORMATION FLYER.

 

 

art. 2 – SET THEME

This year the competition will award the Trieste Prize for the best original project on the set topic of the Tethyshadros insularis, a wonderful Hadrosaurid that lived some 70 million years ago known as Antonio the Dynosaur, displayed at the Civico Museo di Storia Naturale of Trieste and found in Villaggio del Pescatore in the province of Trieste.

The award is supported by the Civico Museo di Storia Naturale of Trieste and marks the twentieth anniversary of the discovery of the remains.

The competition’s dedicated section is open to all candidates.

 

 

art. 3 – REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION

The competition is open to all designers born in CEI member states (Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine) in compliance with its stated purposes, and to designers born in Estonia, Germany, Kosovo*, Latvia, Lithuania and Turkey as well.

Any groups competing should consist exclusively of members born in the countries listed above.

Each contestant can enter only a single project, unless entering one for the general theme of the competition and a separate one for the Trieste Prize’s dedicated theme.

(* This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence)

 

Every participant should submit:

- A picture or a visual documentation of the selected tourist attraction (JPG format, min. size 10x15cm, 300 dpi resolution).

- An account detailing the reasons for the choice of tourist attraction and the rationale behind the design of the kit (max. 1000 characters, in English).

- The project of the original souvenir (max. size 10x10x20cm) entered the competition, containing all the information required for its manufacture in small-scale, low cost production (no more than three A3 tables, in free technique, in JPG or PDF format, press quality).

The contestant may provide further information on any locally available specialist skills and/or firms suitable for manufacturing the object.

- A tourist information leaflet accompanying the object designed (in the contestant’s own language and in English, in free format, max. size A3), providing details useful in promoting the attraction and its location (pictures, maps/routes/entertainments/personal recommendations, etc.).

 

 

art. 4 – TERMS OF PARTICIPATION AND DEADLINE

Participation in the competition is free.

Applicants should register using the online form on the www.triestecontemporanea.it website, attaching a CV and a copy of the Identification Document of the single candidate/group leader.

Any groups wishing to participate should fill out the application form with the name of the group leader and list the names and countries of birth of the other group members.

The application – complete with the material described in art. 3 – must be presented by midnight (Italian time) on 15 JUNE 2014.

All the material requested should be included directly in the online application form. Applications that are incomplete or submitted to the committee by any means other than the online system will not be accepted.

 

 

art. 5 – CONFIDENTIALITY AND RIGHTS OF USE

All material submitted will be treated as strictly confidential and under no circumstances consigned to third parties, namely anybody not on the panel of judges, before the close of the competition. The contestants selected shall be bound by the same principles of confidentiality until the official publication of the results by the organizing Committee.

The Committee reserves the right to publish the competition documents and the projects of the selected and winning contestants in the promotional material and in the exhibition catalogue.

If contestants wish to protect their work by applying for copyright or a patent registration, they may do so before entering their work in the competition.

 

 

art. 6 – PANEL OF JUDGES

The panel of judges, consisting of international experts and representatives from CEI and Trieste Contemporanea, will meet to select a number of designs for the final exhibition and to award the various prizes.

The Trieste Contemporanea website will carry the announcement of the names of the members of the panel (by 31 May 2014) and its decisions (by 21 June 2014).

The panel’s decisions shall be final.

 

 

art. 7 – DESIGNS SELECTED AND AWARDS

The works selected by the panel of judges will be shown in the competition’s final exhibition in Trieste and published in an online catalogue on the Trieste Contemporanea website.

BEBA PRIZE - for the youngest designer among those selected: 1000 Euros.

TRIESTE PRIZE - for the best design on the set theme: 1000 Euros.

CEI PRIZE 2014 - for the best design from one of the non-EU CEI countries: 3000 Euros.

GILLO DORFLES PRIZE / FIRST PRIZE TRIESTE CONTEMPORANEA 2014 - for the best design 2014: 4000 Euros.

 

 

art. 8 – REALIZATION OF THE WINNING DESIGNS

Should Trieste Contemporanea decide to realize the winning designs, the winner will be informed in due course. The prototypes will remain the property of Trieste Contemporanea.

 

 

art. 9 – PUBLICATION OF THE COMPETITION RESULTS

The competition results will be accessible online on the www.triestecontemporanea.it website. They will also be announced by the Committee through the international media.

 

 

art. 10 – HORS CONCOURS PARTICIPATION

The organizers reserve the right to invite a number of designers to take part hors concours.

 

 

art.11 – EXHIBITION OF THE SELECTED AND WINNING DESIGNS

All the selected and winning designs, together with any presented by designers invited hors concours, will be displayed in a final exhibition, part of the NOW programme of the 2014 Biennial of Design of Ljubljana (BIO 50), to be held in Trieste in September 2014.

The Trieste Contemporanea Committee reserves the right to exhibit the works elsewhere in Italy and abroad. The catalogue of the final exhibition will be published on the Trieste Contemporanea website.

 

 

art. 12 – AWARDS CEREMONY

The awards ceremony will take place in Trieste at the opening of final exhibition. The winning designers will be invited to travel to Trieste at the organizing Committee’s expense in order to collect their prize.
