Giuseppe Gaggini, fountain at the Parque de la Fraternidad, Havana – Cuba
This essay, conducted with scientific rigour based on an impressive body of documentary sources, forms a true work of art that is the first in the Futile Cycles series, in which the author plays the role of historian.
It tells the previously unpublished and forgotten stories of the Genoese sculptor, artist and marble entrepreneur Giuseppe Gaggini, (1791-1867), set between the Alps and the Tropic of Cancer.
A descendant of a family of sculptors active in Genoa since the 15th century , Gaggini found himself involved in a colonial intrigue that linked two distant places – a marble quarry in Piedmont and the city of Havana in Cuba.
