trieste-graz

the exhibition at the Haus der Architektur

The exhibition TRI/E/S/T/E – Some considerations on the various identities of a territory opens at Palais Thinnfeld in Graz. It is a project born from the collaboration between Trieste Contemporanea as part of the “Harbour of Culture”, a 2-year project which is devoted to the possible social and cultural dimensions of a new “port of cultures” image, and the Haus der Architektur in Graz, as part of the architectural events programmed in Graz for “Architektursommer 2018”. It portrays the tensions between Trieste’s history and its Mediterranean allure.

This is a new activity aimed at Europe – an important part of the ‘dialogue with the art of Central Eastern Europe’ regularly carried out by Trieste Contemporanea and curated by Austrian Michael Petrowitsch.  Six authors address the perception of Trieste and its complex identity, including the nostalgia for a ‘lost’ Trieste from the ‘post-colonial’ Austrian point of view.

The exhibition includes works by Styrians Martin Behr, Hannes Gellner and Otmar Lichtenwörther, and Trieste artists Stefano Graziani, Emanuela Marassi and Davide Skerlj. A special section ‘Harbour for Cultures’ is curated by the Viennese transparadiso duo, Barbara Holub and Paul Rajakovics, who for the first time present the video ‘100 desires for Harbour for Cultures’, which is a collection of a 100 desires from the people of Trieste. On display from Italy, artist Stefano Graziani show photographs from the series “L’Isola” (2009), Emanuela Marassi presents her dense work “Mare strabico” (2013) consisting of two felt sculptures and video loop that ‘portray’ the sea at the top of Molo Audace, and Davide Skerlj presents his video work ‘Passaggio obbligatorio (il pesce e il flauto)’, 2018, made for the exhibition and filmed in Porto Vecchio with flutist Bayarma Rinchinova.
